Answer

  • Blood transfusion giving set: Specifically designed for transfusing blood/blood components and incorporates an in-line filter (typically 170–200 microns) to remove clots/aggregates during administration. It is the appropriate set to use for red cell transfusion. [1]

  • IV infusion giving set: A standard IV infusion set intended for routine IV fluids/medications and is not a blood administration set. Using an IV infusion giving set instead of a blood transfusion giving set for transfusion carries a risk of serious patient harm. [2]

Practical difference in one line: blood transfusion sets are purpose-built for blood and include the correct in-line filtration; standard IV infusion sets are not designed/validated for blood and should not be substituted. [1][2]
